One arrested for armed holdup

Police arrested a man on Wednesday on suspicion of robbing the Crew Road Mini Mart earlier in the day.

A masked man armed with a machete robbed the small roadside store on Crewe Road of an undisclosed amount of cash around 10.15am.

He was chased from the scene by a customer, but managed to flee towards Palmdale Drive.

Police issued a description of the robber as dark skinned, around 6 feet tall and of stocky build. He was wearing three-quarter length dark jean pants, a dark hoody, a red baseball cap and had dark cloth material covering his face.

There were two customers and a female cashier in the store at the time of the robbery. No-one was hurt.

Staff at the store said this was at least the fifth time the shop had been broken into or robbed in recent years.

The suspect remained in police custody Thursday.

Anyone who was in the area this morning and witnessed the crime, or the suspect fleeing the scene, should contact George Town CID on 949-4222, or the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-TIPS.

Police questioned staff shortly after the hold-up.

  1. What is being done about the crime on this island? Wasn’t the government going to release a new plan to fight crime? What happened to that? Is the entire scope of the government/police plan to fight crime the CCTV system? This incident shows its shortcomings — CCTV won’t be directed towards residences, and all the CCTV system will do is turn the crime no this island from businesses towards home invasions.

While crime itself continues to be a massive problem, it is equally alarming that the RCIPS and the government offer NO solutions, and don’t even pretend to be making any extra effort to address the increase in crime.

We need to hold the government accountable. Call your MLA and ask what is being done to fight crime. Ask when the government and the RCIPS are going to start taking new actions. Ask what they plan to do when the CCTV installation leads to an increase in home invasions. And tell them that you are prepared to vote them out of office if they don’t immediately focus on this problem!
