A post mortem examination has confirmed that a 64-year-old female visitor to Cayman died of injuries sustained in a crash of a car her husband was driving.
The day after the woman died, police arrested the woman’s husband, also 64, at Own Roberts International Airport on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in Cayman on police bail.
The crash happened on Jubilee Lane off Batabano Road, West Bay, around 9.45pm Tuesday, 10 May, when the couple from Ohio and a 58-year-old male passenger in the back seat were travelling in a Suzuki Liana that collided with a black Chevrolet Colorado.
The driver and male passenger in the Suzuki sustained minor injuries; ;the 23-year-old local driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.
The woman was taken to hospital complaining of head and back pain. She died on Monday, 16 May.
“A post-mortem examination took place on Wednesday, 18 May… The examination confirmed that the cause of death was impact injuries connected to the collision,” a police spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added: “The RCIPS is in regular contact with him [the driver] to update him on the progress of the investigation. He is being supported by a family member and the US Consulate.
“In addition, RCIPS officers will continue to provide support to him and his bereaved family during this difficult, and sensitive, time.”
Police have not revealed the circumstances of the collision that led to the man’s arrest.
