Dominos fans pleased to be champs

The Dominos Warriors and their supporters have a right to be happy.

The club finished off the two-time defending champions Wolves in the division one national basketball league finals. Thanks to a 105-90 victory in game two, the side earned a two-game sweep and their first title as a group.

Among the fans on hand to watch were Jason White and Michael Samuels. White brandished a broom for game two and stated he had been waiting a long time for this moment.

“Three years we’ve been waiting and finally it happened,” White said. “We had to sweep them out. It was simply a clean sweep. I’m a big supporter. Over the last three years I’ve always been behind them. All I know is Dominos killed them in game two and the Wolves couldn’t stop us.”

Indeed the match was well over before the fourth quarter. By half-time Dominos had a 12-point edge and swelled that advantage to 25 points at the end of the third quarter. The undisputed star of the game would be Jorge ‘Steamy’ Ebanks who notched 36 points off eight three-pointers and tallied three assists and two steals. A student at New York’s Daemen College, it would be a triumphant return home for the George Town native as he posted 19 points in game one to earn Finals Most Valuable Player.

Ebanks, 25, states the championship was never in doubt.

“I guaranteed you we was going to beat them,” Ebanks said. “I told you that you could quote me saying we’d sweep them. All I can say is I told you so because there’s no game three now.”

The championship is also redemption for the Warriors and their fan-base. Last year the side were knocked out in four games by the Wolves at the University College of the Cayman Islands hall. Before that the club endured a number of trying seasons, playing matches outdoors at the Cayman Islands Basketball Association court that would end in playoff losses under the name team Shaolin (that squad’s only title reportedly came back in 2003).

Samuels states that history makes the 2011 title even sweeter.

“I’m glad for the Warriors as I’m from West Bay and I have followed Collin Anglin for years,” Samuels said. “Wolves dropped us out last year and with all of the seasons before that, I’m humble to see us win. Next year I’m getting a jersey to show we’re serious fans.”
