Port agreement with Chinese

Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush announced Wednesday
afternoon that he had signed a ministerial memorandum of understanding with a
Chinese government-owned company called China Harbour Engineering.

The agreement seeks to expand cruise ship facilities at
three locations on Grand Cayman, the Premier told Legislative Assembly members.

Mr. Bush said the agreement involved three elements:
designing, building and operating a cruise dock and related facility in George
Town, renovating and expanding the Spotts jetty; and developing a cruise ship
pier in West Bay.

He told lawmakers the Chinese company would work with the
government and the Port Authority on “appropriate development plans” and that
there would be opportunities for local investors to participate.

A local architecture and design firm, OA&D, has been
retained by China Harbour Engineering, the Premier said.

In response to a question from Opposition Leader Alden
McLaughlin, Mr. Bush said details of the proposal would be sent to the Central
Tenders Committee for review.

  1. Im all for the environment and I aint a engineer but I dont think promoting coral growth on the dock would be a good thing seeing how close the cruise ships have to get to the dock.

Eventually the coral growth might damage the hull of the cruise ship unless someone continuously chips it away which would be kill the coral anyway..

Good for an artificial reef, might not be so good for a cruise pier.
