Cayman’s top golfers are fine tuning their swings for the Caribbean Amateur Championships in Trinidad and Tobago next month.
The squad of 12 golfers, a coach and a team manager will head to Port of Spain for the championships from 31 July-6 August. Selection for the squad was based on the best four scores from six qualifying rounds around the Cayman Islands Amateur Golf Championships sponsored by Cayman National Bank.
The qualifying rounds were held at the North Sound Golf Club between January and May. The team member for these championships and the categories they will compete in are: Hoerman Cup; Adam Nashed, Jason Lovelock, Philip Wight, Serge Berube and Jason Perras; Ramon Baez trophy (Mid-Amateur) – Joel Dodson (Amateur champion) and Michael Wight; Francis and Steele-Perkins (Senior); Tracy Moore and Paul Woodhouse; George Teale Trophy (Ladies); Samantha Widmer (Amateur champion), Isabel Lawson and Emily Ribbins.
Team manager is George Christie and the head coach, with over 12 years of experience playing on the national team is Robert Chilman, who will be helped training the team by head pro Jason Deerwester.
Chilman, who spends his days as the assistant director of golf at the North Sound Golf Club, said: “our mid-am team is made up of our two best players on the island and I believe they will be very competitive. Our two seniors are very experienced and should prove to be a strong team.
“Our ladies team brings our best junior and our ladies champ along with one of last year’s team members. I believe that our ladies are going to be a big surprise to some of the other countries, and do very well.
“Two of the ladies – Widmer and Ribbins – are going to the Island Games just before the championships so they should really be tournament ready.”
Among the team-members looking forward to Trinidad is defending women’s title winner Samantha Widmer, who feels that the Cayman Islands has one of the strongest teams in years.
“Many of our team members are new this year and I feel as though they are going to bring an immense amount of talent to the team,” Widmer said. “Even though we have a small population compared to Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico, I believe we have the talent necessary to bring back more titles than last year.
“Being able to represent your home country at this level of competition has continued to be a passion of mine and I will do my best to bring home the win for Cayman.”
This year, the national team was sponsored by Cayman National Bank, the title sponsor of the Island Championships, and KPMG who will be supplying the brightly coloured uniforms.
