Young designer’s Pirates Week T-shirt

Aaaargh me hearties, there’s skillful things afoot in the youngsters of this rock of plenty.

Mikeda Harris, age 8, was chosen from among more than 40 entrants to win the competition to find a design for the official T-shirt of Pirates Week.

“The children were given a copy of the rules and told that the theme was Cayman’s Marine Life,” Pat Bazell-Taylor of Pirates Week tells Weekender.

“Four out of the five judges chose Makeda’s drawing, which encompasses the marine life of Cayman with just a hint of piracy.”

Great standard

Judging the competition were Paulette Connolly Bailey, Darvin Ebanks, Stanley Panton, Anne Mason and Bernie Bush.

“It was very hard to judge because the standard of work was so good,” says Pat.

“We feel we should give mention to the two runners-up – Akinta Charlotte Thomas, age 17, from Cayman Academy and Thalia Rego Ramos, age 14, from John Grey High School.” Makeda was very happy to receive her prize, posing happily with art teacher Miss McFarlane and her dad. She doesn’t know what she is going to spend the $100 prize on yet. Weekender wonders if she might use it to find some buried treasure…

T-shirts featuring Makeda’s brilliant artwork will be available during Pirates Week 2011.
