Haye steps up and impresses

The Fourth of July is a time for fireworks but the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association put on a great show two days before.

The first action of the day saw the newly formed Cox Lumber Colts face off against the PWC renegades. Cox Lumber got the scoring started when Taj Haye hit Brad Connolly for a 60 yard touchdown pass.

After PWC’s drive stalled it was Haye’s turn again to light up the skies when he threw a 40 yard TD pass to Andrew Frederick. Haye then closed out the first half with another precise 30 yard TD pass to Jeff Wight.

In the second half PWC came out and tried to regain some momentum with Chris Lebeau connecting with Antonio Hanna to move the ball into the Colts territory but unfortunately the Colts defensive led by Rhys Ebanks, Chris Duty and Stafford Jackson shut down the drive and they were forced to punt. On PWC’s next possession they started deep in their own territory and an errant snap sailed over Lebeau’s head and fell into the end zone for a safety.

This gave Cox the ball back and Haye capped off his tremendous day when he threw a 10 yard TD pass to Marcus Cumber. Haye who was filling in for starting QB Kevin Solomon may have started a QB controversy with his great play. Final score: Cox 26 PWC 0

The second match saw the Hammerheads Pirates face-off against the Calabash Farm Soldiers in a battle of veteran teams. The game was a defensive battle in the first half with no team putting any points on the scoreboard the only highlight of the half came when Nigel Solomon intercepted a pass thrown by the Farm Soldiers fill-in QB Leslie Harvey.

The second half looked like it was going to be a defensive battle like the first that was until newcomer Terrick Myles made an exciting 40 yard run to put the Farm Soldiers in great scoring position.

This gave Harvey a stage to show his mobility when he scrambled around eluding the Pirates’ Neville Morgan to find Will Peguero in the corner of the end zone to give the Soldiers a 6-0 lead.

The score unsettled Hammerheads but Pirates QB Chris Lucas settled down and started to hit short passes which moved the Pirates into scoring position and Lucas scrambled in for a seven yard TD run and then sealed the deal when he threw the extra point to Ransford Welcome giving the Pirates the lead. The Soldiers had a few more chances to win the game but the Pirates defence stepped up with its excellent pass rush lead by Morgan and finished the game. Final score: Pirates 7 Soldiers 6

In the day’s final game it was the Doghouse Bulldogs going up against the dms HellCats. These games are always a defensive battle and this one was no different.

The first half saw both offenses struggle and both defences flourish. The HellCats defensive line consisting of Craig ‘Festa’ Frederick, Renaldo Garcia and Damien ‘Beast’ Barboram were on the prowl all day for Doghouse QB Dave Velez as was the Doghouse defense led by Todd Hazlewood and Dillon Claassens who kept dms QB Frecko Ebanks from getting into a groove which led to the halftime score of 0-0.

In the second half the tide turned and both offenses started to move the ball. The HellCats came out with a very aggressive run game led by Barry Bush, Barboram and Oliver ‘Darkstar’ Parker and the Bulldogs started to hit short passes and option runs.

The first score of the game came when Velez hit Hazlewood with a short pass over the middle. Hazlewood eluded a few dms defenders and ran 40 yards for the go ahead score.

The HellCats were forced into a punt on their next possession and the punt pinned the Bulldogs deep into their own territory. The Bulldogs lost momentum on this possession when Barboram stepped in front of a Velez pass and made a great interception. Then it all came down to a HellCats fourth and goal from 22 yards out dms QB Ebanks threw a TD pass to Renford ‘X-Factor’ Barnes who made a great catch at the back of the end zone.

Ebanks then sealed the game when he hit Clay Coleman for the extra point. The final play of the game was a Hail Mary pass that almost won the game for Doghouse but the receiver was downed at the one yard line as time ran out. Final score: dms HellCats 7 Doghouse 6.
