Police investigate arson at new home

A pre-dawn fire Thursday at a
house on Reef Street in Newlands was likely deliberately set,
Royal Cayman Islands Police said.

Police and Cayman Islands Fire Service
crews attended the scene just before 5.30am Thursday and saw a
new building that was under construction there ablaze. Police said
three small fires were set alight, one on the ground floor and two on the first
floor that caused some damage to the roof of the home.

There was no sign that
accelerants, like gasoline, had been used. Police said it
was likely that materials already present on site were deliberately set
alight with a match or lighter. No one was in the building at the time of
the fire.

Chief Inspector Mike Cranswick asked members
of the public to provide assistance in identifying anyone responsible for
the fire. Those individuals are asked to contact the George Town Police
Station at 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.
