staycations Meet new friends in East End

For a fabulous, quiet, Caymanian experience why not head out to the East End for a staycation?

Although it’s less than an hour away from any point of Grand Cayman, East End is without a doubt worth spending a weekend relaxing and enjoying a different pace of life with the friendly locals.

As well as the unspoiled interior and excellent wildlife, plus wonderful beaches, there also happens to be some of the finest scuba diving not just in Cayman but on the planet, in case you were wondering.

Erin Bodden of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association is a big fan of the area.

“The Reef, Moritt’s, The Castle, if you are a diver going to Compass Point there are great experiences there. Miss Vivine’s, for those who have not been, is brilliant Cayman food and one of the best Caymanian experiences. She operates literally out of the side door of her kitchen; you walk up, place your order and sit out on her deck overlooking the water. It’s good, homemade, down-to-e

arth cooking that really hits the spot.

“Or go to the fish fry for fried fish and fritters – you cannot go wrong,” she says.

Stop and chat

And that somewhat sums up the East End; a genuine, Caymanian experience.

“If you stop and talk to the locals everybody is friendly. Stop by the bar and hear some fishing stories. There are still a lot of crafts taking place in East End. It is the roots of Caymanian culture and it is beautiful.

“The snorkelling is so fantastic because it’s so untouched. And there are several public beaches where you can pull off at the side of the road, bring a picnic and go snorkelling. You don’t get so many tourists, and the marine life is pristine. I have seen some huge barracudas out there – I think one winked at me once.”

The East End is a district unto itself and as an island getaway is extraordinary for locals and visitors alike. Spending some time in this tranquil and lovely part of the world truly is giving yourself the gift of relaxation; discovering – or rediscovering – East End will help the weekly stresses, pressures and woes just melt away. With a truly Caymanian heart and the sense of being surrounded by natural beauty, it’s a part of Grand Cayman that is rightly feted as being one of the most unspoilt and welcoming.
