Bodden Town MLA Dwayne Seymour speaks out

After crown offers no evidence

Bodden Town MLA Dwayne Seymour is speaking out after the Crown offered no evidence against him regarding a case of alleged assault involving the politician.

In a phone interview with the Caymanian Compass, Mr. Seymour revealed what he thought was afoot in relation to charges laid against him stemming from an incident at the Grand Caymanian Hotel on 1 May.

“I am glad this is now behind me and better sense has prevailed,” Mr. Seymour said. “The whole thing has been a circus. I am of the view that this conveniently deferred focus from the poor job the RCIPS is doing in this country and gave some people a level of profile that is not deserved. A lot of man hours were spent on this matter, while some businesses were being robbed twice in one month and people were going missing.”

He said the main purpose of the police is to protect and serve and people should not try to raise their profile on the back of a man who was trying to keep their family together and did nothing wrong.

He said a lot of money was also spent bringing these matters to court, causing him to wonder what people’s motives were. This has been a most trying time for me and my family,” said Mr. Seymour, who said his kids had to hear about the situation at school and be teased, eventually leading to them needing some counselling.

“If my children were not so young it might be different. To a degree, my family has been further destroyed by the system,” he said.

Mr. Seymour was acquitted of charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice weeks earlier in connection with the same incident.

He said as a representative of the people, he has accepted his life had become public, but urged that a level of dignity, respect and compassion still be shown.

“I realise the sacrifice we as public officials must make, but it is one that I am proud to bare for the people. Someone has to take on that burden.

Though society must temper their thirst for sensationalism.

I am determined to serve the people irrespective of any kind of persecution I may bare publicly,” Mr. Seymour said.
