Locals flag postseason kudos

Flag football has officially hit its climax here in the Cayman Islands. 

The postseason for the sport is under way for both women and men. The ladies competition, officially called the 2011 Dart Women’s League, sees its first playoff matches this Saturday, 24 September. 

The Camana Bay field is slated to see two matches, organized by the Grand Cayman Flag Football Association, at 10am and 11am. In the first contest the third seed Lone Star Jager Monsters battle the defending champions and second-ranked Hammerheads Lady Sharks. From there number one seed the Dominos Wolverines contend with the Andro Killa-Panthers. 

Lone Star head into the match with a 4-3-1 record but sport Most Valuable Player contender Renee Thompson. The Lady Sharks meanwhile are 6-1-1 behind rookie of the year candidate Serena Yates. 

Dominos have a sterling 7-1 mark under top quarterback Antoinette Lewis (16 touchdowns, four interceptions) and star receiver Benecia Thompson (17 receptions, seven touchdowns). Andro have a 1-6-1 mark but could play spoiler behind captain Sophia Dilbert.

On the men’s side, the semi-finals are up next in the Island Air Flag Football League playoffs. The Ed Bush field in West Bay is slated to host matches, put on by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association, this Saturday, 24 September at 3.30pm and 5pm. 

The first round took place over the weekend as the Cox Lumber Colts dispatched of the Burger King Panthers and the Calabash Soldiers dismissed the Hammerheads Pirates by two touchdowns. 

Calabash quarterback Glenn Duran, who was a handful in and out of the pocket, states the victory is a good step forward. 

“It was a good team win and everyone did their job,” Duran said. “The Pirates put up a good fight. We left a couple plays on the field. We want to improve and be better this week and capitalize on our chances.”
