Cox and Calabash earn semis berth

The postseason is a time for tense contests and sterling performances and the local men’s flag football playoffs have seen both already.

The Island Air Flag Football League hosted some very entertaining playoffs games over the weekend. In the first game of the day rookie club the Cox Lumber Colts downed the Burger Kind Panthers 12-7.

Colts QB Kevin Solomon had his team ready to go from the whistle, moving the ball down field with a mix of run and pass. Brad Conolly broke off a long run to move the Colts down into scoring position. A few plays later QB Solomon found Taj Haye in the end zone for the opening score. Shaken by the early score, the Panthers composed themselves with QB Neil Clements going to work on the Colts defence. Clements hit his favourite target Ryan Smith a few times as the Panthers moved the ball down field. Panthers captain Brendon Malice then made a spectacular catch in the middle of the field and eluded several Colts defenders to score. Ryan Smith ran in the extra point to give the Panthers the lead.

Now down a point, Colts QB Solomon rallied his troops to respond. Solomon hit his open receivers as the Colts moved the ball back into the Panthers red zone. The Colts then retook the lead when Solomon found Brad Conolly in the end zone, who made a diving spectacular catch. The Panthers could not respond as Cox held on to win the game and book a place in the semi-finals against Doghouse.

In the second playoff game, the Calabash Farm Soldiers took on the Hammerhead Pirates. The veteran Soldiers have had a difficult season as they finished with a .500 record. The Pirates are also a veteran team but at times just do not play up to their full potential.

Calabash got off to a good start with QB Glenn Duran at the helm. Duran is a very elusive QB with a strong arm and this skill was put on display as he eluded several Pirate defenders and then hit WR Peter Whittaker with a long throw in the end zone for the opening TD.

The Pirates then had a chance to score themselves as they worked the ball down-field. Pirates had a great chance to score when QB Chris Lucas got free of the Calabash defence and probably should have ran in the TD but he elected to throw and the ball was tipped and eventually intercepted by Duran, ending the Pirates threat.

In the second half, Calabash picked up where they left off in the first half moving the ball into the Pirates red zone. Pirates defender Nigel Solomon made a great interception of a Duran pass but it was ruled pass interference on Solomon. Duran then recomposed himself and threw a nice pass to Sean Moyle for a TD, effectively ending the game. Now the Calabash Soldiers face the dms Hellcats in what should prove to be a very exciting game.

Both semi-final contests take place this Saturday, 24 September, at the Ed Bush field in West Bay from 3.30pm.
