Liquor Board decision wrong

Lame.

That’s what we’re calling the decision by the Liquor Licensing Board to not allow clubs to extend opening hours.

The members are blaming the recent spate of killings on their decision to deny club owners to keep their doors open into the wee hours of the morning.

While the Caymanian Compass doesn’t endorse late night carousing, we do support a business having the ability to make ends meet, financially.

It is a given that more and more people are going out to clubs later and later.

For club owners to be financially successful they have to do all they can to lure those patrons and keep them within their confines as long as possible.

The recent gang-related shootings have absolutely nothing to do with going out to night clubs.

Indeed, many of the shootings happened hours before any of the nightclubs closed their doors for the day.

Yes, the shooting in East End happened near the hour of 3am, but there are no nightclubs in East End, just a few bars and some houses where there are sessions; nothing covert or sinister.

For the Liquor Licensing Board to blame the recent killings on their decision to not allow establishments to remain open longer is, indeed, lame.
If they don’t want to extend the hours, just say so. Don’t blame it on gang warfare.

Blame it on an increase in drunken-driving.

Blame it on an increase in domestic violence.

Blame it on our Christian heritage.

Blame it on that very fine line between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

But don’t blame it on a few rogue individuals who live and die by the gun.

Most people who go clubbing aren’t involved in gangs; they go out to have a bit of fun and club owners happily take their cash off them to make a living in this bleak economy.

The people who live and visit here face enough fear with the recent killings. We don’t need members of the Liquor Licensing Board to add to that fear with knee-jerk reactions based on unrealities.
