Red Cross wraps up September to Remember

As the Cayman Islands Red Cross wraps up its September to Remember Campaign, it is still seeking support from the community for the other 11 months of the year.

Disaster preparedness and disaster response remain at the forefront of Red Cross efforts.

Disaster preparedness is focused on educating the community to the types of disaster they may encounter in the Cayman Islands from hurricanes and flooding to fires and mass casualty incidents. Disaster response is primarily focused on meeting the immediate emergency needs of the people and communities affected by disaster. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter and health services to the vulnerable. In addition, Red Cross disaster relief assists individuals and families affected by disaster to resume their normal daily activities independently.

In Grand Cayman, the Container Project is an integral part of disaster preparedness. The Red Cross provides one 40-foot container of essential supplies, such as tarps, buckets, collapsible jerry cans, hygiene kits, cleaning kits, family kits, shovels and generator, to each of the seven districts as well as Cayman Brac and Little Cayman to help in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

The Red Cross is expanding its disaster management programme to create community district response teams. “Our goal is to empower community members to become more resilient in times of crisis and have the tools they need to help themselves and each other,” says Jondo Malafa Obi, director of the Cayman Islands Red Cross.

There are other ways the community can help:

Run for 50 years – Cayman Islands Marathon

This year, the Red Cross is partnering with the Cayman Islands Marathon and looking for 50 runners to run for the Red Cross. Runners interested in raising funds for the various programmes can contact the Red Cross directly for more information at [email protected]

Support the Thrift Shop

For years the Cayman Islands Red Cross Thrift Shop has served the most vulnerable population in our community by offering new and gently used items such as clothing, shoes, furniture, appliances, household and other miscellaneous items, which were all generously donated by members of the community. The Cayman Islands Red Cross Thrift Shop at the headquarters building on Thomas Russell Way offers donated clothes, furniture and household items at discounted prices.

All revenue collected from Thrift Shop sales are used to fund the Red Cross’ community service.

Opening hours are Tuesday – Friday from 9am – 2pm and 5pm – 7pm; Saturdays from 7.30am – 1.30pm.

Support Deals on Wheels

While the shop is based at the Red Cross Headquarters building, it does have an outreach programme named Deals on Wheels, a mobile thrift shop in the form of a trailer. Items from the shop are loaded up in the Red Cross trailer and taken to key locations in each district so that residents from that area can enjoy the great bargains of the Red Cross in their own community. Deals on Wheels goes to the different districts one Saturday of every other month with the exception of the month of May.

Become a volunteer

The Cayman Islands Red Cross can only achieve its goals with the help of skilled and committed volunteers. It needs people from all walks of life, all communities, who can bring their different skills and experiences to their charitable work, and can commit to their humanitarian cause.
