Cayman Marathon pushes for teams

Organisers of the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon have announced new divisions in the four-person relay team event which will result in more opportunities for teams to win on Sunday, 4 December.

Teams will now compete in one of four categories: Men Only, Women Only, Mixed Open where any combination of men and women can make up a team and Corporate where men and women from the same company or business can form a team. Awards will be given for the first, second and third place finishers in each of these categories.

“We had 70 teams compete in the Marathon last year, which was an almost 80 per cent increase from the 2009 race,” explained Rhonda Kelly, Race Director. “We think creating these divisions will enhance the competition and allow teams that may normally not have been a contender in the original team event to increase their chances of a place on the winners’ platform.”

Kelly said all-female teams in particular will likely benefit most from the new categories as the winning teams over the years have traditionally been all-male teams.

Kelly also encourages companies to promote some friendly competition within the ranks by getting multiple teams together.

“We’ve had law firms, accounting firms and even hotels register multiple teams from various departments within the business. It promotes team camaraderie and personal fitness which not only benefit the people participating in the race but the company as well.”

The Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort, Official Hotel for the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, entered four teams in the 2010 race and is expected to do the same again in December. Team members came from within several departments in the hotel and included the property’s General Manager Enrique Tasende.

“At the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort we strive to encourage our associates to have a healthy and active lifestyle by facilitating trainings and wellness programs all year round,” explained Sales Manager Laura Skec. “Participating in the marathon was an idea that came from many members of the different departments. We have many associates who are active in various sports so sponsoring our teams was a great way to support their spirit of competition as well as promote physical activity.”

“It was really exciting to have the hotel sponsor us last year,” recalls Lucila Leiva, Marriott Sales Executive and member of the 2010 Marriott Team La Plage. “From the beginning we felt committed and proud to be participating in the Cayman Islands Marathon on a company level. The most memorable moment was when all the Grand Cayman Marriott teams gathered before the marathon started.

“The combination of adrenaline, enthusiasm, joy and the challenge itself was contagious and encouraged me to run my best. We are all keen on being active and participating in sports as a hobby. However the main goal, and the reason for us being a part of this beautiful experience, was to have fun. We are looking forward to this year’s challenge again.”

The Marriott teams have enhanced their participation even further by opting to run and raise funds for the Cayman Islands Red Cross which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Cayman Islands.

“We hope to see many companies follow Marriott’s example and get their employees active and participating in team activities such as the Intertrust Cayman Islands Relay,” says Kelly.
