Seven Mile Beach hotel Comfort Suites is currently undergoing improvements to its rooms. A gymnasium, private business centre and renovated breakfast room are all being installed at the property, said general manager Thomas Mason.
“We are going to have a brand new setup for the breakfast and are renovating 22 rooms into a new configuration, which is a king business format,” Mr. Mason said. “They overlook the swimming pool and are going to have new decor and new fittings. We feel that they are the ideal type of fit for the business traveller coming to Cayman.
“This is just the first phase of the renovation; phase two will follow after the season, when all the rooms will be completely redone,” he said. “It is a very extensive renovation with an investment of over two million dollars which shows the owners are committed not just to the hotel but to the Cayman Islands.”
Helping the economy
The ownership group of the hotel is comprised of Caymanians and US investors and 90 per cent of the property’s staff is Caymanian. Because staff have been repurposed to assist with the renovation, said Mr. Mason, Comfort Suites has been able to keep them employed during the low season.
“We have actually hired people rather than laying them off,” Mr. Mason said. “There were 30 people working on the project at peak times and we were dealing with local suppliers and contractors to do this. That was really encouraging and we are just happy to help the economy in some small way.”
Improvements began in August and will be finished on 1 December.
The work has been undertaken with minimal disruption to guests, he added, because the building is configured in a way that enables one wing to be shut down for building work while the other part of the hotel can function as normal.
“This renovation was because we listened to the customers – what do they need, what do they want, what are they looking for not just from a business but also a leisure-based stay,” he said. “These travellers want a workout area, a breakfast in a fun environment then want to relax in a nice, king sized bed with flat screen plasma. We listened carefully to what they wanted and I am sure they are going to be delighted with the result.”
