WB house explodes, woman arrested

Royal Cayman Islands Police have arrested a woman in West Bay following the overnight explosion of a home on Fig Close.

Cayman Islands Fire Service crews received a call of a house fire around 1.17am Saturday, Chief Fire Officer Dennom Bodden confirmed.

However, prior to the fire report the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said its officers received a domestic violence call at the home on Fig Close, located between Powell Smith Road and West Church Street.

The man who called police said that his girlfriend was “smashing up the house”.

Police officers arrived at the scene shortly afterward, at which time there was an explosion within the house.

It appeared that propane from a tank had been leaked into the room of the home and an unidentified ignition source caused the blast to occur.

The entire left side of the home was blown apart, with debris littering the yard from the blast. The explosion also damaged the responding police vehicle, but no officers were injured.

Mr. Bodden could not immediately confirm the cause of the blast. He said firefighters had the small blaze from the explosion under control within minutes of their arrival.

“It appears that the explosion did involve some propane,” Mr. Bodden said, adding that the Home Gas company was on scene inspecting the tank.

The male victim was taken to hospital where he was being treated for serious burns Saturday. The woman, aged 50, sustained a cut to her hand and has been arrested on suspicion of arson and assault.

Hospital personnel described both injuries as non-life threatening.
