Unity netball club are not the most successful team in their sport, but they are one of its most community-minded. Proof of that will come next month.
The side is hosting a fundraiser rally on 14 November at the New Testament Church court on North Sound Road in George Town. The rally will feature netball matches throughout the day from 9am until about 6pm.
Unity team manager and president Faye Green states the point of the rally is about fostering community togetherness.
“Our motive is fundraising for the netball club,” Green said. “But the topic of the day is what can I do for my country to bring the youth together. Through this heap of violence we know the youth are scattered. So we want to motivate the public to improve our community.
“We’re inviting other churches, other netball clubs on Island and the general public to come out and join us for a day of netball and community spirit. Matches will be for males and females, both young and old. Games will be for both mixed teams and women only teams.”
Food and drinks are slated to be sale and prizes are on offer. Trophies will be awarded for the top three teams with additional honours slated for categories like best shooter.
This is not the first time Unity has staged a community tournament. Unity helped New Testament Church stage a family netball night in April featuring the church’s mother and father of the year and players from various local teams.
Like many residents, Green is discouraged by the string of five murders over nine days last month. All of the victims were younger than 29-years-old and the majority of cases were gang-style killings.
A registration fee will be in effect for next month’s tournament. For more information call Faye Green at 328-6681.
