Jay was Deep on taboo topics

The Laughter Lounge comedy nights have become an essential fixture with anyone wanting to have a good old fashioned belly laugh and last weekend they got another glorious monthly fix.

Chicago radio legend Tony Sculfield made a third appearance and had all creased up at the Vivendi Theatre in the Strand on Friday and Saturday. Promoters Brad Watts and Rod Jefferson are helping fill a void in many people’s social calendar with these shows.

Sculfield hosted but he could have carried the show by himself judging from all the fresh material he regaled us with. He reckons instead of drug-sniffing dogs at the Owen Roberts Airport, Cayman should have chicken equivalents. He also reckons Cayman police are so inadequately equipped to fight crime, they only have one gun in the whole of the force and local cops use a scooter to chase criminals.

Jay Deep from HBO’s Bad Boys of Comedy and the movies Barbershop I and II stepped up and seamlessly kept the vibe going. His dysfunctional family in Chicago got blasted, especially his obese, bullying sister. Zimmer-frame walking grandma didn’t get omitted either. Jay Deep was sad because he had just broken up from his girlfriend. “My wife isn’t too pleased either,” he cracked. He claims he has “ugly girl radar”, joked about how ignorant French-Canadians are and mocked Oprah Winfrey’s acting ability. When he momentarily lost a couple’s attention as they started arguing near the front, a question about sexually transmitted disease quickly silenced them and got a roar from the audience.

The night began with a live performance from the Suite Elite Trio. The Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball’s Youth Development Programme were partial benefactors from some of the proceeds. There was an after party at Elements nightclub above the Vivendi on Friday, which admitted free entry before midnight with the ticket stub.
