Editorial for 14 November: Get into our heritage week

One of the best parts of Pirates Week begins today when Bodden Town and Savannah kick of a week of Heritage Days.

In case you haven’t noticed, we are in the full throes of Pirates Week 2011.

The fun continues today at Harry McCoy Sr. Park at Gun Square Road in Bodden Town from 10am until 8pm.

If you’ve never been to Heritage Day in Bodden Town, make sure you make it this year.

It’s one of the best in all the districts, Bodden Towners will tell you.

And we concur.

This year’s event will be bigger and better with the inclusion of the good folk from Savannah, which opted to join Bodden Town this year instead of having their own fest.

There will be good Caymanian fare, so go with your appetite.

And don’t forget to take your dancing shoes.

Heritage Day continues Tuesday in George Town, Wednesday in East End, Thursday in West Bay, Friday in North Side and next weekend on Cayman Brac.

The Heritage Days are the best way to get a glimpse of Cayman of old.

East Enders are well known for their collection of artefacts and boast of being the best makers of heavy cake, but then again so does West Bay, North Side, George Town and Bodden Town.

The best way to prove that latter point is to make sure that you attend all the Heritage Days.

Just as it’s easy to detect different dialects from each district, you’ll see that methods of cooking and certain long-held Cayman traditions are just a little bit different in each of our villages.

We implore those that do participate in Heritage Days and other Pirates Week festivities to be careful and don’t drink and drive.

Pirates Week is a wonderful time to play and remember our heritage.

If this is your first Pirates Week, we hope you have fun and make wonderful memories. If your a seasoned attender, you know the drill.

To all, enjoy. And happy Pirates Week 2011.
