Go West for Heritage magic

Wonderful West Bay is the place to be today as the West Bay Heritage Site, next to Ed Bush Stadium, hosts the area’s heritage day.

Yes, Pirates Week sponsored by SaxonMG is in full swing and it is a perfect opportunity to connect, or re-connect, with the magic of the island.

It all gets under way at 11am with the official opening. Students of John A Cumber Primary School will delight with their rendition of Cayman’s beautiful national song, then there is an opening prayer followed by ribbon cutting from West Bay members of the legislative assembly.

The day is notable for arts and crafts, children’s activities and more and this will include local dishes, craft stalls, information booths, demonstrations plus a plethora of other games, activities and pastimes.

The afternoon is also packed with a number of things to keep your time both fruitful and fabulous. At 2pm give your ears an absolute treat in the company of those fantastic Panoramers – the steel pan experts are fresh from winning this year’s steel pan contest and under the tutelage of the whirlwind of musicality Earl La Pierre. You won’t hear better this side of Trini itself.

Rope making

That pesky Blackbeard will be making an appearance in the company of the Seattle Seafair Pirates at 3.30pm, paving the way for the 4pm visit by the Governor and Mrs. Duncan Taylor, members of the legislative assembly, Miss Teen Cayman and many others.

Entertainment will be provided by John A Cumber Primary School, West Bay Kitchen Band and the Panoramers.

It’s going to be great! There’s also a Cayman rope making competition to find out the most dextrous at this valuable local skill.

The cuteness will be ramped up to da max at 5pm with a baby show for little ones up to 36 months old and at 5.30pm check out West Bay’s Got Talent.

That one’s open for guys and gals from 5 to 18 years old.

Add to this old time skits, church service and the recognition of donors and contributors and it’s going to be a wonderful day all round.

The 8pm fireworks and 9pm gate prizes round of another great day in the Republic of West Bay.
