Cup vs. handgun: Cup wins

Royal Cayman Islands Police Service officers said Thursday that a man managed to avoid becoming the victim of a robbery overnight Wednesday by fighting back – with a cup.

Around 11pm Wednesday, RCIPS officers said a married couple was returning home on Palm Dale Avenue in George Town. As they walked onto the porch of their home, a man appeared from their yard and asked for money, police said.

The victims said the man was wearing a Halloween mask and appeared to be holding a hand gun. Police said the would-be robber went to search a bag when the husband struck the suspect in the head with a cup. At this point, the robber apparently decided to give up and run away, police said.

Nothing was taken and both the husband and wife were uninjured. The suspect was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, black denim pants, black gloves and the mask. No arrests were immediately reported.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCIPS Criminal Investigation Department in George Town at 949-4222, the police tip line at 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.

  1. Absolutely brilliant.

A man is holding you at gunpoint and you fight back with a cup and the and it seems that the person is a brilliant individual .

So, the man with the cup is facing a man with a gun.The guy with the gun is not impressed with this bravery and shoots the two of them. Now the man is a dead fool and so is his wife. Dead heroes.

Give them what youve got and pray thats the end of it.Never take a cup to a gunfight.!!!!!

  2. What I don’t understand is why is it that the bandits are well armed but law abiding citizens are being disarmed by this RTCIP commissioner. I truly hope Mr. Baines thinks before he makes decisions. However if he is so much against guns where is his boarder patrol when the guns are being imported into the country. where is the boat, the helicopter, the patrol cars, the marine police, somebody is not doing their job.

    I have a question.

Who is guilty of not protecting our boarders since so many guns are still being imported ? Yah, who is responsible?

    That’s a bit defeatist, don’t you think ?

I wouldn’t advise not complying with a gun-weilding robber either but it is still a judgement call an individual has to make when faced with such a terrifying situation.

In this case the man fought back and won, so some credit is due to him for his courage.

What people need to learn about is situational awareness so as to not be taken by surprise or become unnecessary victims.

In most cases, a robber has carefully chosen his victim and set the stage for his actions long before the victim becomes aware of it.

Its a pity that this is the world in which we live today but we must be aware of our surroundings at all times and lessen the chances of becoming some criminals victim.
