Royal Palms hosts flag

Locals can use flag football to stay fit this holiday season.

The sport will stage an inaugural Boxing Day Classic tournament on Monday, 26 December. The four-a-side co-ed competition is slated to take place at Royal Palms from 10am.

Competition format sees two girls on the field of play at all times. There is a maximum of six people per team with each squad required to pay a $100 registration fee.

Games are 15 minutes long and are on a knock-out schedule.

Serving as organizers is the Grand Cayman Flag Football Association, one of two local flag bodies. Proceeds from the beach event will go towards funding the association sending a seven-a-side team to the 41st annual US Flag and Touch League National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida in January.

News of the beach competition comes after the 2011 International Cup earlier this month. The last Cayman Islands Flag Football Association event of the year saw locals represent various countries at Ed Bush field in West Bay. Team USA won the men’s category behind Most Valuable Player Chris Lucas, who outshined talents like Glenn Duran Jr. Team World would win the women’s segment.
