Local fishing will be showcased on American television.
The Cayman Islands Angling Club encourages the public to watch ‘George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing’ on the NBC Sports Network. Set to appear this Friday, 6 January, at 2.30pm and Saturday, 7 January, at 11am, the show highlights Cayman fishing.
Titled ‘Cayman Islands Wahoo,’ the show focuses on TV personality George Poveromo fishing in Cayman with noted marine artist Carey Chen. The duo, who were aboard the 65-foot boat ‘Cayman Time’ (which belongs to Chris Briggs), nabbed 18 wahoo with some reportedly weighing up to 57 pounds. They also caught four yellowfin tunas and had a blue marlin catch and release. The show also features wahoo trolling and noteworthy factors such as bait and boat speed.
Poveromo, 53, was here last November filming for the show. The South Florida native came down with cameramen Steve Miller and Kevin Tierney and stayed at the Comfort Inn Suites on Seven Mile Beach.
The angling club feels the programme is a benefit to the country and to local competitive angling. Through initiatives such as this, the local economy and tourism product can receive a boost while Cayman sport fishing can garner added international interest.
The first tournament of 2012 will be the Barcadere Classic 21-22 January. An angling club sanctioned event, the competition is expected to see fishing take place around Grand Cayman’s waters with weigh-in at the Barcadere Marina in George Town.
