Grand Court opens with ceremony

The Cayman Islands Grand Court opened formally on Wednesday with a ceremonial guard of honour outside the Law Courts Building followed by speeches indoors that reflected on 2011 and highlighted concerns in the year ahead.

Chief Justice Anthony Smellie thanked Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Ennis for the participation of officers forming the guard of honour.

He said it was an important symbol of police support for the administration of justice.

He announced the appointment of Magistrate Nova Hall as Chief Magistrate to succeed Margaret Ramsay-Hale, who took up her new post as judge in Turks and Caicos on 1 November.

He also said Court Administrator Delene Cacho will retire at the end of February.

The chief justice addressed topics ranging from legal aid to the need for a new court house. Some of these matters were mentioned first by speakers moving and seconding the formal opening of court: Attorney General Samuel Bulgin, Caymanian Bar Association President Dale Crowley, Law Society President Charles Jennings and attorney Colin McKie.

For the occasion, Court One was filled with attorneys, court staff and dignitaries including Governor Duncan Taylor; Deputy Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, Leader of the Opposition Alden McLaughlin, Cabinet Minister Michael Adam and Financial Secretary Kenneth Jefferson.
