Cayman Sports Authority is gearing up for a pair of sporting events in the coming weeks.
First up is the annual Cayman Islands Humane Society Kickball fundraiser tournament. Slated for 4 February, the competition is expected to take place at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town.
Spectators are welcome for the all-day competition, which should see much of the focus on 2011 champions the Doghouse Devils. To be clear, kickball is a hybrid sport which has been a childhood favourite for many Cayman residents. Also known as soccer-baseball, kickball features the same rules as in baseball with the big difference being one must kick a large rubber ball rather than hit a baseball with a bat.
From there comes the 2012 Cayman World Cup of football on 10-12 February. Taking place at Kings Sports Centre, the competition centres on locals representing their various countries in five-a-side football. Residents of the Cayman Islands have suited up for a number of nations over the years in Africa, Canada, Costa Rica, England, Scotland and Ireland.
Heading into next month, focus will be on team Honduras. The Central Americans have won the tournament, which has only been in existence for three years, on three straight occasions. The Bay Islands boys are the reigning dynasty and pressure remains on team Cayman to beat the squad in the finals.
Adding to the hype of the event is its live broadcast on csa.ky. Live streaming of the games will continue this time around with additional players slated to take the court in two skill-based divisions (competitive and recreational) in addition to a women’s category. It should be noted that many of the players are currently involved in the ongoing mens and co-ed five-a-side leagues, which take place throughout the week at Kings.
