The public is advised to be on the lookout for two male Cuban detainees who escaped from the Immigration Detention Centre over the weekend.
The men, Rafael Hidalgo Figueredo and Fernando Figueredo Corrales, were detected missing Sunday, 22 January, by guards at the facility, which is located on Fairbanks Avenue.
Both males are in their 30s. Anyone seeing, or having information on either man should contact 911, or immigration authorities, as soon as possible. Contact Officer Scott at 526-0433 or Officer Thomas at 526-0488.
The public is reminded that it is a criminal offence to assist such persons.
Since the escape, enhanced security measures have been introduced at the facility, which houses Cubans who arrived by boat on the shores of the Cayman Islands in recent months.

Geez. Do they have locks there?
Why are the public reminded that it is a criminal offense to assist these Cubans when it doesn’t seem to be an offense to assist escaping locals?
Its hard to keep your eye on things when you are texting. High level training is required to perform this job.
These guys are not committing a crime. They don’t deserve to be in a place with locks. I, for one would accidentally leave doors unattended if I worked there. Hopefully they leave Cayman and obtain freedom.
This policy of detaining and sending back to Cuba these people who are only seeking a better life is not only inhumaine but also against the laws of the sea. While I understand that we can’t take all of them we should at least provide food, water and fuel to help them on the way. It’s the CHRISTIAN thing to do.
About 25 years ago during the Mariel boatlift exodus from Cuba, I sponsored two Cuban refugess who received government assistance until they were able to be on their own and self sufficient.
We assume automatically that just because the immigrant detainess were in jail and escaped that they are some sort of criminal. What good is going to another country and seeking asylum when that country is so hypocritical as to arrest you and return you to the land from which you escaped? The Government of the Cayman Islands should repent and offer asylum as best possible as many other countries have done rather than treat persons arriving on their shores as criminals.
