The facts of the case have been laid on the table for the
members of the Coalition for Keeping Bodden Town Dump Free.
Government doesn’t give a whit about what they think about
opening a new – and supposedly improved – landfill in the Bodden Town District.
That’s the plan once moves begin to shut down the unsightly
dump in George Town.
Discussions have been had, but work hasn’t yet begun to cap
and remediate the George Town Landfill.
There does seem to be some confusion about the two sites. To
make it clear, the George Town Landfill isn’t being moved to Bodden Town.
The Bodden Town site will be an entirely new dump site, one
that we hope will be modern and efficient and an asset instead of a negative to
Bodden Town and its residents.
More than 200 people turned out at a meeting Tuesday night
at the Bodden Town Civic Centre to listen to current, past and would-be
politicians demonise the landfill move to Bodden Town. Obviously missing from
the meeting were the two elected Members of the Legislative Assembly Mark
Scotland and Dwayne Seymour. Frankly, we don’t blame them for not showing up as
what was a pretty genial meeting could have turned in to a UDP bashing affair,
which would have taken the gathering off task.
The lone politician at the meeting who had a voice of reason
and wasn’t there for rabble rousing and raising potential votes was George Town
MLA Kurt Tibbetts. He rightfully told the crowd that Government doesn’t care
what they have to say; if they don’t want the dump in their district, they’re
going to have to take matters in their own hands, not depend on politicians.
Placing a new landfill in Bodden Town will be that district’s political
football. If it passes, it is more likely than not that the two sitting MLAs
won’t get re-elected.
But the future of trash and landfills on Grand Cayman – and
Cayman Brac – isn’t about votes. It’s about the legacy we leave our children,
grandchildren and generations to come. We need to do what is best for the
greater good, not for a select few.

That was a skillful editorial that I believe supported the moving of the landfill to Boddentown but I am not sure. I would prefer the Boddentown residents fighting for recycling professionally sorted run country wide which is necessary and vital for the country.
