New port restrictions revealed

New restrictions implemented at the Royal Watler Port by the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands earlier this month will mean that only tourists visiting on cruise ships docked in George Town will be allowed inside the terminal.

People may have noticed a police presence outside the Royal Watler Port during on the date the restrictions went into effect.

Port Authority Manager of Cruise Operations and Security Joseph Woods said the reason for the new measures.

“We had begun to notice some undesirable activity occurring on and around the terminal and the Board of Directors authorised the Port to take immediate action to contain it,” said Mr. Woods, who pointed out that this was the reason no announcement was not publicised. He did not say what type of undesirable activity was the source of the restrictions.

Mr. Woods did however note that, “The measures do not affect those with legitimate business on the Port. Neither does it affect taxis etc.,” adding those who legitimately operate at the Port have Port issued ID’s that allow them access into the facility.”

He said the police have maintained a presence at the Port for some time now.

“Customs and Immigrations also contribute to the security of the Port and Cruise visitors daily and we appreciate the service they have given us,” he said.

The restrictions are only active when cruise ships are in Port. After cruise ships have departed, in addition to days when no cruise ships are in port at the Royal Watler Terminal, the restrictions are relaxed and anyone can visit the shops at the Royal Watler Terminal.
