Elderly couple’s house burgled three times in past two years

An elderly Cayman Islands couple whose home was invaded by burglars last week has been the target of break-ins at least three times in the past two years, the Caymanian Compass has learned.

The latest incident happened Thursday when three masked men were caught in the act by a woman who stumbled upon the suspects after getting up to use the restroom. Both she and her husband are in their 80s.

Although Royal Cayman Islands Police Service officials did not provide exact dates, they did confirm that at least two other burglaries occurred at the house on Magellan Quay in the Governor’s Harbour area since 2010. In one break-in about two years ago, a suspect was arrested and brought to court. He’s now serving a jail sentence, according to police.

Details of the other break-in, which apparently occurred earlier in 2010, were not known by press time.

The Caymanian Compass has made contact with the couple, but they declined to be interviewed for this story.

In the latest incident, which happened around 2.30am Thursday, police said the female resident surprised three masked men inside her home.

The Compass understands the woman screamed, causing her husband to wake up. One of the suspects allegedly held a firearm to the elderly man’s head when he confronted them.

Police said one of the three suspects did have a gun and that the intruders demanded cash from the elderly couple. It was believed the three men got in through the window of the home.

One of the victims was able to activate the burglar alarm and the three intruders ran off from the house. It’s not known what, if anything was stolen.

The victims are not injured, but have been left shaken by the ordeal, police said.

No shots were fired.

The only description available for the suspects at this time is that they all wore dark clothing and their faces were covered, police said. At press time, there had been no word on any arrests in the case.

Anyone who has any information which could assist the police is asked to call West Bay Criminal Investigation Department on 949-3999, the RCIPS Tip Line on 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).

Police also said a marked vehicle, which was responding to the report of the home invasion, was involved in a collision with another vehicle in the vicinity of Jacques Scott at the junction of Shedden Road. As is normal policy following a collision, both drivers were required to take breath tests. The police driver passed this test and the other driver, who refused to take the test, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He has been bailed to appear at court at a later date.

Following the collision the police driver attended hospital. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

  1. And there is only one reason why. They were an easy target.

Change the law so everyone can arm themselves in their own home. No one is an easy target anymore. Burglaries stop.

It doesn’t get more 11=2 than that.
