The Caymanian Compass has confirmed that more ganja has been found in an office area of Her Majesty’s Prison Northward.
According to HMP Deputy Director Daniel Greaves, about an ounce of marijuana was found in the shift commander’s office inside the prison facility by prison officials after officers received intelligence about the drug.
“Because of the amount of surveillance we have been conducting in the past few months, prisoners are looking for new ways and places to beat the system,” Mr. Greaves said.
He added that it was believed that the drugs were placed in the office by orderlies, who have access to the office for cleaning and maintenance duties in a bid to find creative ways of storage.
“Extensive searches have them getting innovative and we have been causing them (prisoners) a lot of hardship with our efforts,” said Mr. Greaves, who added that drugs floating around in the prison compromises the comprehensive approach to rehabilitation set out by the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs, which was why the staff at HMP are stepping up their efforts and placing an extreme amount of vigilance and attention to the matter.
Just a few days ago 4 ounces of ganja were found in the administrative office known as the White House, where the director and deputy director’s offices are located.

Oh well , If they can strip search teen girls for a contraband cell phone , they must be stripping the guards and prison officials for illegal drugs.
With the exception of liberty, what’s good for the inmates is good for the guards.
So the Deputy and Director are not being investigated?
It is their office and yes we can give them the benefit of doubt……….. you know, the way we do every British Commissioner, every native Caymanain officer, ie suspend the Director /or Deputy!!!
In my opinion, they’re responsible for the administration and control of the prison, hiring their well-spoken, highly qualified friends and if ganja is found in THEIR offices they too should be subject to investigation and not by their friends in the police force….oh do we have that objective Complaints Unit yet?….
and they should not only reap benefits of a secure job but be held accountable for what happens on their watch!
SMH!!!!!!! if the prison administrators are not held accountable this will continue…..convicts will not be rehabilitated as there will always be access to drugs even while incarcerated …….we will continue to have Caymanians on drugs…..money will continue to be the temporary solution to give perception of ‘addressing’ the issues…..prevention will never be priority……..so start making some heads roll NOW and bet job security will be more than forcing us the public to pay for inefficiency.
We can’t keep increasing expenditure for the prison (police) service when clearly the accountability is not there and the positive outputs expected are not being met………..all in my humble opinion!

I realise now that you actually DO get the picture…I couldn’t agree with you more.
The statement of this Deputy Director of Prisons that these drugs could not possibly be connected to any officer or something to that effect, says it all, doesn’t it?
Prisons officers have been discovered to be bringing drugs into Northward Prison for and on behalf of prisoners before.
About 7 years ago, one was murdered, shot in the head in Bodden Town, while on trial for just such an offense…no one was ever convicted of this murder but the message was clear.
Now maybe the Canadian prison report makes much more sense; ironic or karmic that this drug incident should happen at just around the time of the release of this report ?
The nationality-based coalitions within the CI Govt., the RCIPS and the prison system need to be dissolved once and for all.
This will not happen overnight but the sooner the process is started, by qualifying and hiring more Caymanians as only one other option, the better off the Cayman Islands will be in the long run.
That a more thorough investigation into this drug incident at the prison administrative offices should be done by an independent authority goes without saying.
Thanks for your very valuable comments and insights.
