More than $150,000 worth of cocaine has been seized after it washed up on the shoreline on Little Cayman.

Police were alerted after “a large number” of packages believed to contain about 30 kilograms of cocaine was spotted on the shore off Guy Banks Road in Little Cayman.

The packages, found on 2 Dec., were flown to Grand Cayman by the police air operations unit and later destroyed.

Large quantity of ganja recovered

In a separate incident on 12 Nov. about 147 pounds of ganja was impounded following a police operation on a property in Windsor Park, George Town, along with drug equipment.

Police said a 49-year-old man from George Town was later arrested on suspicion of possession and consumption of ganja and possession of ganja with intent to supply.

Police said he was released on bail and that the investigation is ongoing.

A police spokeswoman said on Saturday said statistics on the total cocaine haul for the year would not be available until next year.

But the Compass reported in June that about 98 kilograms of cocaine worth more than $1.65 million was recovered after it washed up on Cayman’s shores in 2024.

Investigators, regional analysts and drugs trade sources, however, said the figure was likely to be a fraction of the real amount that floated in by chance.

Some of the cocaine washed up is handed in to police. But much of it was said to be sold on at cut price rates to Cayman dealers or middlemen.

A source with links to the country’s drug trade said last year the actual figure washed up would be far higher and that a significant portion of the Cayman market was supplied by cocaine that arrived on the tide.

He added some people were prepared to take the risk of trying to sell the drugs to Cayman dealers.

Some of the cocaine that arrives in Cayman has been ditched by cartel boats running drugs into the US from South America.

It may have drifted for months, even years, before it found its way to the country.
