Caribbean fine art fair

The brain behind a Caribbean art fair is calling for Caymanian talent.

Anderson Pilgrim is the central character in the upcoming Barbados-based CaFA Fair, which runs from 7 to 11 March and showcases artists from across the Caribbean region.

And whilst the 35 exhibitors in the 2012 event are already set in stone, Anderson tells Weekender that in future years he hopes to see Caymanian participation.

“To my many friends in Cayman Islands we look forward to your participation in all aspects of CaFA Fair going forward. The show is about inclusion of the entire Caribbean and its visual artists, since in the past our region has been viewed as an art world curiosity and we are scattered across the globe.

“We need to celebrate and respect our own before we can expect others to do so. What better way to do than have our own event in the region where we can come together and show the world what we have to offer?”

Range of styles

The fair takes place at Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in Two Mile Hill and features works by leading Caribbean artists from countries including Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nevis, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and US Virgin Islands, with styles ranging from the intuitive self-taught to the classically trained.

As well as fine arts there are visual artists, performances and collaborations as well as a symposium that discusses relationships between Caribbean and Latin American art and strategies for developing the region’s cultural industries.

“CaFA Fair came about after many years of my partners, T&T’s Dr. Gloria Gordon and Jamaica’s Loris Crawford, and myself showcasing Caribbean artist in major exhibition and art fairs in the US,” explains Anderson.

“The thought process was that it is time to invite the art world to the Caribbean to see the regional talent honed at home and abroad in one location combining artists, academia and commercial interests.”

The aim, he concludes, is for the Caribbean Fine Art Fair to become an annual exposition for the appreciation of Caribbean Visual Art and a show that captures the diversity, creativity and the integrity of Caribbean art.

Sounds good to us – Cayman has that in abundance.
