Island Heritage feel secure in spite of early setbacks

At a glance, the Island Heritage Silver Mist are in trouble in local women’s basketball.

The squad features mostly new players to the sport and lost their first three matches in the 2012 Cayman Islands Basketball Association national women’s league.

However there is still optimism for the newcomers (who, technically, are a new-look version of the old Silver Bullets team).

Among those who believe a turnaround is possible is rookie point guard Sarah Boucher. The George Town resident, who is originally from Ireland, is averaging 6.5 points per game and states the determination is there.

“The team we played [last Thursday in the Home Gas Flames] are very strong,” Boucher said. “Our team has new players to the sport and we’re still learning how we play. However, we play with a lot of passion and determination. We just got to iron out a few problems and we will get stronger each time.

“We can do pretty well with heart and determination. We always put up a fight and we don’t give up easily. We’re gelling well. We’re doing well and we just got to put in our work.”

There are few positives on the statistics sheet for head coach Daniel Augustine’s squad. Prior to yesterday match against Welly’s, the Silver Mist had the worst defence (allowing a league-high 169 points) and the second-worst offence (scoring a paltry 115 points). They have lost their games thus far by an average of 18 points.

On the other hand, Scimone Campbell is still one of the league’s best scorers. She ranks third in the competition averaging 15.3 points per game. Campbell also is the league’s best free-throw shooter (at 62.5 per cent) and the ninth-best rebounder (8.3 boards per contest).

Island Heritage will have to wait until 8 March to get a shot to turn things around against the Lady Wolves.
