National track and field hero Ronald Forbes remains on target for the 2012 Olympics.
Forbes, 26, has turned his attention to indoor meets this month as part of his preparations. The North Side native, who is a Florida International University graduate, states he has competed at meets in US colleges.
“I started the New Year on the track excited for the Olympics fast approaching,” Forbes said. “My new training season has started great and I was up to compete indoors at the University of Missouri last weekend. I hoped to do great things and produce some good times. Since Daegu, I have competed in two meets indoors so far in the mens 60 meter hurdles.
“Results weren’t as I expected due to me starting back training about a month later than my training group. But my training programme has changed since my first race three weeks ago and the results are coming together better than I’ve ever seen.”
Forbes competed in the Missouri All-Comers event in Columbia, Missouri last weekend. The meet was his latest event since competing in the International Association of Athletics Federation world championships last summer in Daegu, South Korea. There he would reach the Men’s 110m hurdles semifinals and post a then-personal best time of 13.54 seconds.
Over the years, a big concern for Forbes has been his health. He has dealt with a number of injuries to his feet and hamstrings. So far, Forbes states he is injury-free.
“I’m feeling healthy and stronger than I ever have before, both physically and mentally. Me, my track coach Joey Scott and my strength trainer Monica Swasey made assessments, based on the 2011 season, on areas that I could improve on. Last October we started preparations for the 2012 outdoor season with preseason work, which is focused on a high level of workout repetitions.
“Where the emphasis in the past seasons was to focus on quantity to improve strength and not focus on quality all that much in the early stages of training, that has changed this year where we are focused on quality of every rep, set of everything I do, leaving no stone unturned.”
