Locals have a few more days to prepare for fast-pitch softball.
Originally scheduled to begin last Saturday, the Cayman Islands Softball Association will start the 2012 season this Saturday, 10 March. The Field of Dreams facility in George Town sees an official opening from 5.30pm, which includes an awards presentation and some exhibition games between male and female players.
League Director Marlon Thomas states that as it has been for the past couple of seasons, the male league will continue playing their games on Sundays afternoon at the West Bay softball field and the female league will play at the Field of Dreams on Saturday nights. Thomas further added that the association is appreciative for the support they have received from sponsors as well as from players and the faithful fans.
In particular, the association extends a special thank you to: Mike’s Ice for their contribution to the fundraising efforts, Western Union for the courtesies extended during the 2011 season and Jose’s Escape service station for their long-standing support and the role they played with assisting the male national team at the 2011 Nicaragua International Softball Tournament attended in Corn Island, Nicaragua last September.
The association is pleased with teams’ participation in both leagues and the sportsmanship displayed. In the male segment, the Patriots remained champions once again, claiming the 2011 championship under the leadership of Peter Whittaker and Bradimir Robinson. The Patriots are back-to-back champs and will be seeking their third straight title in 2012. Jose’s Escape Pirates made their way up to second in the table and Donald Watler’s Latinos, traditionally one of the strongest teams with players like Yosvani Ebanks and Sandi Jiminez, was eliminated in the play-offs.
The female league was full of surprises in 2011. The Caledonian Wildcats, the 2010 champions, lost a few players to injuries during the play-offs and had little to stand up with at the finals against emerging CNB/APS Security Team Extreme, who would emerge the overall winners. CADC Stingers and Western Union/National Concrete Challengers didn’t make it to the finals.
As the association prepares for the upcoming season, an invitation is extended to all persons who are interested in joining the fast-pitch excitement.
