International football comes to the Cayman Islands next week at club level with Elite Sports Club and George Town Sports Club playing Bermuda’s top club team, North Village Rams.
The Cayman Islands hosts Group 1 of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships. It runs from 25-29 March at the TE McField Annex.
Last season’s Cayman Premier League champions, Elite and runners-up, George Town face Bermuda Premier League champions North Village Rams, There will be three matches. The group winners and the best runners-up of the three groups will advance to the next round to be played in Puerto Rico, against the Puerto Rico Islanders and Caledonia AIA of Trinidad in May.
At a press conference held at the Cayman Islands Football Association office, George Town Head Coach Lee Ramoon, said: “From George Town’s perspective it is a great opportunity, especially for our players in regards to be exposed to play in the region. Some guys had the privilege to represent the national team and play at that level; however, most of our players don’t get such opportunity, so it is wonderful for our players to participate in this prestigeous event.”
Elite Technical Director Gregory Ebanks said: “It is a lifetime opportunity and both Caymanian teams are looking to advance further and compete in Puerto Rico. I would like to thank God for giving us this opportunity to play and I also want to thank the club members, coaching staff, fans, Mark Scotland, the Minister of Sports and CIFA to encourage and support Elite and George Town.
Jairo Sanchez plays in midfield for Elite and the national. He said: “These are big games we will play here and we need the support of our fans to use the home advantage.”
George Town keeper Miguel Pitta said: “This is a big opportunity for all of us, and I am happy with all the support we are having. Thank you all for this. Sanchez is my team mate on the national team and we have played some international games together, but, as a team, this competition will help us to get better, so we need everyone’s support to use this opportunity to qualify to the next round.”
All matches are at the TE McField Annex and tickets are on sale for $10 for a single match and $15 for all three matches.
