The Esso Blazers basketball team have suddenly emerged as a juggernaut.
Esso registered their fifth straight victory by beating the DHL Wolves 76-48 at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. Esso are now 5-0 atop division one of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national men’s league.
Jasen Campbell, 26, turned in another stellar outing with 12 points off two three-pointers, five rebounds and three assists. The born-and-bred George Town native states his side are the favourites to win it all.
“So far, we’re looking good,” Campbell said. “Some areas we have to correct as a team. Like down the stretch we have to control the ball and eliminate turnovers.
“The future is looking bright for us to win the championship. As I said, we need to execute in areas we’re failing in but, for the most part, we’re looking good.”
Campbell had help from Samuel O’Garro, who led all scorers with 23 points off three treys, 17 rebounds and two blocks. Kevin Maxwell added nine points, 13 rebounds, three assists. Special mention goes to Carlo Archibold and Deandre Simpson, who combined for 15 points and 24 rebounds.
The Wolves were led by Dwight O’Garro and his 16 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks. Carson Fagan added 11 points and six rebounds with Sandi Jiminez, Eckerd McField and Andres Kirchman combining for 15 points and 14 rebounds.
With the loss, the Wolves are in third place with a 3-2 record. They play again this Sunday, 1 April, at Camana Bay against Shining Stars Childhood Care and Education Centre at 5.30pm. Esso are off until next Sunday, 8 April, when they face Shining Stars at 7pm.
