Home Gas build playoff momentum

The Home Gas Flames are heading into the women’s basketball playoffs with added fuel.

The defending national champions downed the Island Heritage Silver Mist 60-49 last Thursday at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The Flames are now 4-2 and the second seed in the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national women’s league.

Sade Wood, 25, had 13 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals for Home Gas. She states her Flames can win again.

“We can be unstoppable,” Wood said. “Defence wins games and the offence will come. The chemistry is coming. We got what it takes to win the league. I’m very confident.

“I’ve been playing basketball from time I was 14. I was balling at Cox (on the basketball association court). I’m a former national team guard, Most Valuable Player and All-Star. I used to average 30 points back in 2007. It was just a matter of getting back in shape. This is my first time playing with La-Torae Nixon.”

Wood had help from Nixon, who added 19 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Meredith Whitney chipped in 15 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

For Island Heritage, who fall to 1-4, Scimone Campbell was the star as usual with 26 points and five rebounds. Sue Nixon added eight points, five rebounds, four steals while Tishelle Logan and Carrie Barnett combined for 20 rebounds and six steals.

In Thursday’s other contest at Camana Bay, the Dominos Lady Heels closed out their campaign with a 49-45 victory over the Lady Wolves. Courtisha Ebanks had 11 points, seven rebounds and eight steals for the regular season champions, who finished with only one loss on the year. Kamilla Nagy chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Maggie Ebanks had six points, 14 rebounds.

Cassianne Lawrence kept the Wolves in it with 20 points (including two three-pointers), three rebounds and three blocks. Benieca Thompson and Theresa Hamil combined for 12 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.

The Wolves now find themselves 2-4, clinging on to the third seed. Their regular season finale is at Camana Bay on Thursday, 29 March, against the Home Gas Flames at 7.30pm. Before that, 2-3 Welly’s Cool Spot battle Silver Mist at 6pm.
