A man died early Thursday when a car carrying two passengers apparently drove off West Bay Road near the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

Police closed off a section of West Bay Road between the Ritz and Fosters Food Fair at the Strand during a portion of the morning rush hour to facilitate their accident investigation. It appeared from tyre marks scored across the road that the car had veered from the northbound into the southbound lanes then drove into the bush near a utility pole.

The car was located about ten feet off the road in heavy undergrowth.

According to Royal Cayman Islands Police Chief Inspector Harlan Powery, the man who died in the wreck was the vehicle’s driver. No word on the condition of the car’s passenger.

The crash is the second fatal accident so far this year in the Cayman Islands.
