Ovaine pushes on

Team Charterland can now start their title defence in earnest.

The playoffs for division two of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national men’s league begin on Tuesday, 24 April. The multipurpose hall at the University College of the Cayman Islands is slated to host matches from 6.15pm.

Focus will be on team Charterland, who eased their way to the regular season crown. The squad boasts star talents such as league-leading scorer Ovaine Monteith (20.3 points per game), Nathan Smith (fourth in scoring at 17.3ppg and rebounding at 10.9 rebounds per contest) and Will Kourtney (fifth in scoring at 16.8ppg, third in rebounding at 13 boards a game and tops in free-throw shooting at 66.7 per cent).

Butterfield Shockwaves struggled down the stretch but last year’s finalists sport prodigies like Peter Grant (second in scoring at 19.4ppg and fourth in assists at 3.4apg) and Darryl Paddyfoot (third in scoring at 17.4ppg and first in rebounding at 16.9ppg).

A team on the rise is the Titans, behind Bruce Thompson (15.4ppg, 7.0rpg) and Kadane Hall (8.1ppg, 9.4rpg). Rock Hole Fire Ants are faltering in spite of Davion Foster (12.5ppg, 10.7rpg) and Daniel Garrard (12.2ppg, 7.2rpg).

The playoffs feature a best-of-three format for both the first round and the finals. Game two of the opening round is slated for next Tuesday, 1 May, at UCCI.
