Reggae royalty returns to the Cayman Islands in the form of Barrington Levy who performs at the Lion Centre on Friday.
Levy celebrated his 48th birthday on Monday and promises to still be in celebratory spirits. It’s been quite a while since Levy made the hop from Jamaica to perform here. “It was the time of the launch of Digicel in the Cayman Islands, around 2003,” he says over a crackly line. “I had a good time then and look forward to returning. Cayman has been one of my favourite places for a long time.”
He has been touring and working on new material in the studio so the show promises to be a splendid mix of classic songs like Here I Come, Money Move, My Woman, Under Mi Sensi, Wife and Sweetheart, Too Experienced and My Time and recent stuff.
Golden days
Top line reggae and dancehall artists performing here has been sparse for various reasons over the past couple of years so this is a golden opportunity for lovers of the genre to come out en masse and show their appreciation for one of the most respected and entertaining performers with his band Detour Posse.
Levy has reached a mainstream audience through success in the UK and US charts in the 80s and 90s which created a ripple worldwide and that will be reflected with a crossover crowd this weekend.
It is promoted by Epic Day Entertainment and doors open from 6pm with happy hour till 8pm, music by DJ Brooklyn Earick, followed by local sensation DJ Super C till midnight.
Then Barrington Levy performs until 2am. Ticket prices are general admission $25 in advance, $30 on the door and VIP are $50 in advance, $60 on the door.
