Last season the Butterfield Legion of Boom came up short of a championship. Now they are only one victory away.
Butterfield clinched a berth in the title game for division one/AAA of the Cayman Islands Little League 2012 Winter Co-Ed Softball League.
The Legion of Boom won their first two playoff matches at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town. Behind the likes of Chris Orlandini and Bradimir Robinson, the squad beat Island Taste Hot Stuff 7-3 and Home Gas 16-13.
Last year, Butterfield advanced to the finals, but lost to KM Ltd in extra innings. KM were eliminated from this year’s playoffs by the Hot Stuff 16-8 last Tuesday.
Butterfield next play on 15 May at 8.15pm on field four. Due to the double elimination format, their opponents could be either Island Taste or Home Gas (the sides play their semi-final match on Tuesday, 8 May, at 8.15pm on field four).
Of the two, perennial powerhouse Home Gas figures to be the biggest challenge after winning the regular season crown at 10-2 behind stars like Peter Whittaker and Ryan Ebanks.
The playoffs continue on Monday, 7 May, with four elimination games. At 6.30pm the UBS Aces and Starfish Sports square off on field four in a division III/A showdown, the Harbour House Marina Whalers battle in the division IV/D semi-finals at 8.15pm on field two, Dart faces A division rival PWC B on field three at 8.15pm with KPMG A and the Master Batters battling for division II/AA supremacy at 8.15pm on field four.
Starfish and UBS had solid campaigns with 8-4 and 7-5 records, respectively. In spite of fishing talents Rob Jones and Al Parsons, Harbour House had the worst mark in their group at 3-9. Dart (5-7), PWC (4-8), KPMG (5-7) and Master Batters (4-8) have all had challenging seasons thus far.
