This year’s Young Caymanian Leadership Awards recipient will be named during the annual gala Saturday evening.
The awards show will be televised live on Cayman 27 during a 60-minute broadcast starting at 7pm. This year’s finalists are Garth Arch, Dara Flowers Burke, Casandra Morris, Orchid Morrison and Samantha Widmer.
Event
The keynote speaker for the event is interior designer Leigh Anne Tuohy, who was portrayed by Sandra Bullock in the movie “The Blind Side”, about the Tuohy family and adopted son Michael Oher, who now plays professional football for the Baltimore Ravens. Mrs. Tuohy was a member of the design team for the 2010-2011 season of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Edition.
Florida State Rep. Jeff Brandes, who is kin to the local Tibbetts family, will make a presentation related to the event’s theme of “Lead by Example”. KPMG Managing Partner Roy McTaggart, who has been appointed the new chairman of the Young Caymanian Leadership Foundation’s honorary board, will also make an address.
Finalists
Mr. Arch is general manager of National Concrete, founder of Arch Engineering and later this year will become managing director of Arch and Godfrey.
Ms Flowers Burke is a director at the Flowers Group and is poised to take over the managing director’s role in the near future.
Ms Morris is e-business and research manager at the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism. She is also owner of From Small Beginnings Ltd. (Diamond Events Management Group & Diamond Car Wash).
Ms Morrison is legal counsel for HSBC Bermuda where she provides legal advice to the Securities Services division on mutual fund administration, custody and all Cayman-related legal matters. She formerly was an attorney at Appleby in Cayman.
Ms Widmer is property management accountant for Dart Enterprises. She previously was an audit senior at Ernst & Young in Cayman.
Process
The five finalists were nominated by members of the community. To pick the recipient of the award, the honorary board of directors judges the five finalists by secret ballots based on video interviews and details of their individual achievements. Honorary board members with close ties to any of the five finalists withdraw themselves from this final process.
Previous recipients of the award are Olivaire Watler in 2000, Dax Foster in 2001, Sara Collins in 2002, Steve Blair in 2003, Cindy Scotland in 2004, Jonathan Tibbetts in 2006, Canover Watson in 2007, Stephen Ryan in 2008, Elroy Bryan in 2009, Collin Anglin in 2010 and Natalie Urquhart in 2011.
