Calling the kettle black

For as much as I did not wish to respond to Mr. Endre Z Molmar’s cayCompass.com comment, published 21 May, to my letter on ‘Use LC for garbage dump’, I had no other choice but to force myself to answer his letter as to what I find total hypocrisy.

Please allow me to make these few short comments and questions to Mr. Molmar. He talks of preservation and his lack of concern for the participated thought of the depletion on natural resources, our financial centre and its consumer amenities etc., but only as a visitor whose only interest is to enjoy the underwater beauty, diversity, tranquillity and so on that Little Cayman has to offer. He also maintains that its (LC) assets should be safe guarded, but on the other hand, he has admitted to purchasing (an undisclosed amount) property over there.

I ask, for what purpose did you, Mr. Molmar, make this purchase of land?

Certainly in my view, not just for preservation and the like. So Mr. Molmar, where is your lack of interest in the Caymans as an investment and financial self-gain centre as you tend to boast about in your comments? Why did you not just keep visiting and enjoying it all, instead of making this move of purchase. Give me a break. Let’s not forget that all of the Cayman Islands was once a time haven from an otherwise maddening world as you have described, but regrettably some individuals like yourself bought up a lot of land here and there and took away what you stated as gems and treasures of the Caymanian people specifically. After all this is said and done, do not misunderstand me, for I am not against investors or development of these Islands, as it is so needed to sustain growth in every developing country. But please, if you are going to call the kettle black, do so to the pot that also uses the same burner.

  1. Capt. Diaz,

When I commented on your original letter ‘Use LC for garbage dump’, I did not make any references or insinuations about you personally, just on the idea you presented. Your subsequent comment ‘Calling the kettle black ‘ should of rebutted my comments to your on-line viewpoint only, instead of making these knee jerk assumptions based on me saying I am a ‘visitor’ and to the nature of my motives and character.

Not that it is any of your business or even a relevant issue for someone commenting on something and without getting into a long drawn out discussion or having to ‘defend’ myself as to your pre-conceptions, I will answer your posed questions for you.

** ONE: If I understand your first comment about my hypocrisy in my stating conservation ideals and preserving the natural beauty of the Cayman Islands and lamenting the buildup that has occurred in my 15 years of visiting here, well, I do.

True, that in the beginning, I was purely a visitor and enjoying the underwater treasures in the Cayman Islands, specifically Little Cayman. Over the years, having made local friendships here and becoming more conscious of the island as a whole, I was attracted and determined to become more than just a fly-by visitor. About ten years ago I started visiting more than once a year, several times a year in fact, because I love this island.

I was directly involved in conservation efforts in the USA and indirectly supported worldwide causes. I don’t see why I shouldn’t be concerned here, even if just I am just a ‘visitor’. I contribute my time to the organized Lionfish Culling efforts, do culling on my own initiative almost daily , help out research efforts that various agencies do (when asked), etc.

    Is that hypocrisy?

** TWO: You asked for what purpose I purchased land on Little Cayman and state that ‘ . Individuals like myself bought up a lot of land .’.

The reason is a simple one; I want to live down here, hopefully on a permanent basis. Seven or so years ago I bought property for that purpose and 4 years ago started the construction of a home here, it being finished 2 years ago. Now I try to spend most of my time here on Little Cayman. The ‘undisclosed .’ amount of property that I purchased is just a bit more than 2/3 (.67) of an acre. I have embraced and have been welcomed by the community, contribute to the economy by consuming its consumables, utilities, services, etc,. I am retired and have not taken any Caymanian jobs or potential salaries, nor am I a drain on the system.

That is my financial ‘ Investment and financial self-gain center .’ in the Cayman Islands and the extent of me having ‘ took away what you stated as gems and treasures of the Caymanian people ‘.

THREE: ‘ I am not against investors or development of these islands ‘ . I agree, and to that point, I believe that Little Cayman is an example of moderate and sustainable growth, while preserving and safeguarding its resources. Bloody Bay and Jacksons are world renowned for its diving and eco-system and a large draw for the Caymanian diving industry. To this point were my and many other comments directed as to the ramification of such an idea as yours being implemented.

Well, Sir, that is my response to your Caymanian Compass ‘Your Views’ comment published Wednesday 30 May 2012
