The Cayman Islands recently hosted a major powerlifting competition.
The Westin hotel on West Bay Road would be the site of the 10th annual International Powerlifting Federation and North American Powerlifting Federation North American Regional Powerlifting Championship. The Cayman Islands Powerlifting Organisation provided technical support and had local athletes compete.
Led by veteran lifter Tony McInerney, the Cayman side consisted of some 15 people like Zared McLaughlin, 19, who squatted about 369 pounds and had a deadlift of some 429.4 pounds. Heading into the event, the locals trained in the weights room at the D. Dalmain Ebanks Boxing gym.
A number of outstanding performances were seen on Grand Cayman as some 100 athletes from around the region lifted massive weights. Among the countries who took part were the US, Canada, Guyana, Cayman, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands and Mexico.
One of the highlights of the meet was Guyana’s Anis Ade-Thomas smashing his Commonwealth Dead-Lift record en route to a silver medal. He competed in the Men’s Junior 83kg-93kg combined category, finishing behind the reigning North American and US champion, Conway Brookes.
