Jamaican Independence celebrations recently went from the streets of the Cayman Islands to the football pitch.
The Western Union-Jamaica Independence celebration matches were, by all accounts, excellent games that brought a lot of enjoyment for the players and the crowd last Sunday at the T.E. McField Sports Centre (commonly called the Annex).
The opening game was won by the President’s 11 Masters Team, thanks to Lee Ramoon’s goal scored at the 75th minute of play. From there came the feature game, between the Cayman Premier League/Fosters’ First Division Jamaica Select and Cayman Premier League/Fosters’ First Division President’s 11. It was as much entertaining as the masters game, with the best left for the end when the Jamaica Select was losing 1-0.
The Jamaicans recovered with two goals in two minutes, sealing a 2-1 victory for the Jamaican side. The two late goals made the Jamaicans celebrate and rejoice bringing more fun to the event. The feature game goals were scored by Paul Smith at the 40th minute for the Cayman side and Dwayne “Gaza” Wright at the 88th minute and Bob Allen at the 90th minute for the Jamaica side.
For the record, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence. A number of events took place last weekend to commemorate the occasion.
