The last few months have been a hive of activity at the Little Cayman Research Centre in the smaller of the two Sister Islands. The marine institute in Little Cayman has increased its efforts to support local students by providing more scholarships and free of charge courses.
More than 40 students have benefitted from the centre’s residential scholarships this summer, with students ranging in age from 12 to 18. The courses made available include the primary school Marine Sustainability residential course, which is as part of KPMG’s Ocean Literacy programme. The Marine Ecology Camp and the Young Environmental Leadership programme also help provide a broad spectrum of educational courses for all ages.
“This is what sets us apart from other educational institutions,” says Rob Hedges, director of operations. “CCMI takes pride in introducing the younger generations to marine sustainability and environmental advocacy, as well as potentially inspiring them to choose a career in the marine sciences … Let’s not forget the great experience of staying at the research centre in Little Cayman, too.”
The centre said it was fortunate to have support of long-term sponsors such as Foster’s Food Fair IGA and Stuarts Walker Hersant. This year, the centre also has benefitted from new recruits such as Pro Yacht, who sponsored a Marine Ecology Camp scholarship for young Caymanians, Mr. Hedges said.
Ensuring future generations are committed to marine conservation is critical, not only for the marine environment portion of the cultural heritage of the Cayman Islands, but also as an important natural resource for the territory, the centre said.
