Killa-Panthers wrap up top seed

The Androgroup Killa-Panthers emerged regular season champions in women’s flag football.

Androgroup would finish 11-3 atop the Dart Women’s League, put on by the Grand Cayman Flag Football Association. The squad wrapped up their campaign with a 19-6 victory over the Maples Bliss at the Camana Bay Field last Saturday.

Association public relations representative Kathy Miller states their success is due to coaching and new players.

“Head coach Brendon Malice has worked hard to maintain the team,” Miller said. “They have new players like Cassandra Bodden, who is the league’s top offensive player, that have made them progress.

“The return of Alicia Dixon, who was out for a year, is big. They have such a good core of receivers. They’re so deserving of the top spot. They are a lot of fun to play.”

Thanks to top-rated quarterback Christina Hefner (20 touchdowns, 21 interceptions) and Bodden (70 receptions, 12 TDs), the Killa-Panthers excelled on both sides of the ball.

Androgroup were second in offence (scoring 179 points) and second in defence (allowing 75 points). The number one seed now gets a first-round bye and will play on 28 September at 8pm.

Last year’s champions, the Hammerheads Lady Sharks, would finish runners-up at 10-3-1. Hammerheads were third offensively (scoring 171 points) and defensively (allowing 76 points). In spite of losing star Bobeth O’Garro, the Sharks remained a threat behind hurler Hong Nguyen (16 TDs, two rushing TDs) and newcomer Judy Rivers (43 tackles, seven interceptions). The number two seed, who crushed the HOT 104.1FM Cheetahs 18-0 last Saturday, also enjoy a bye until 28 September.

In third would be the Burger King Wolverines at 9-3-2. Statistically, Burger King dominated with the best offence (scoring 233 points) and the top defence (allowing just 50 points). The Wolverines were led this year by Benieca Thompson (46 catches, seven TDs) and Saneata Smith (25 tackles, eight picks, three defensive TDs).

The Zulu Warriors would finish fourth at 9-5, ending week 15 with a 25-0 thrashing of the Subway Stingers. The new-look club was guided by Dionne Whittaker (32 receptions, three TDs and two rushing TDs) and Adrianna Christian (20 tackles, 13 sacks).

Claiming the last two postseason berths would be the 4-8-2 Maples Bliss and the 3-8-3 Cheetahs. Stats-wise, both sides struggled offensively, scoring only 102 points combined. Maples were guided by the sport’s top defender Somali Hall (a league-best 45 tackles and 13 picks) while the Cheetahs featured Amanda Nelson (37 tackles, 12 sacks, two INTs).

Miller, a former Lady Shark who helped form the Stingers, states she is most impressed with the Cheetahs.

“I’m happy the Cheetahs made it in as 90 per cent of the girls have never played flag football before. They made it in, it’s a great achievement and I hope they go far.”

Finishing at the bottom would be the 2-9-3 Lone Star Jager Monsters and the 2-11-1 Stingers. Lone Star featured Renee Thompson (44 tackles, 10 INTs) while Subway, a rookie team, had talent like Nikki Ebanks (23 tackles, a league-best 15 sacks).

The playoffs start at Camana Bay next Friday, 21 September, at 8pm. Burger King face the Cheetahs while Maples tangle with Zulu. The league finals are slated for 5 October at 8pm.
