Rogue Gym fighters are exceptionally busy at present having attended two Muay Thai seminars last week and preparing for their ‘smoker’ show this weekend.
Rogue instructor Grey Brett is the architect of all this activity having brought over Muay Thai experts Poo Choi Kru Bruce Ong and Kru Mikey Perez from Toronto.
Brett himself was promoted to Poo Choi status for all his years of dedication to instructing and promoting Muay Thai.
“The seminars really got the word out for us,” Brett said. “We’ve had so much positive feedback from participants that it has been a bit overwhelming, in a good way. Perez and Ong had a great time and were very impressed with our programme, our students and the weekend as a whole.
“Since the seminar we’ve had a number of people participate in our free trial class programme and I’ve had a few others note that they are certainly going to start attending classes.
“The training at Rogue is always hard so that everyone that attends classes is in good shape.” Brett’s classes run on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 6.30-730 pm and Saturdays from 12-1pm.
The vibe is excellent leading up to the smoker show at the Rogue gym, beside Treasure Island on the West Bay Road. Tickets, which include barbecue food and drink are only $25. The promoter is Chris Dinan who organised with Lachie Hewitt the first, superb smoker, in February.
Kickboxing instructor Bob Daigle has been preparing his fighters for the show. They include his sons Bobby and Alex who are well schooled in martial arts, thanks to dad who is a former karate world champion.
“The guys that are competing in the smoker have certainly levelled up their training in and out of the gym,” added Brett. “We’ve been pushing our limits, sparring lots and working on our conditioning.
“Everyone on our team realises that cardio equals confidence so we are training to be, not only more skilled than our competition, but in overall better shape. I’m really impressed with their level of dedication and the hard work they have been putting into this event.”
“We’ve had to cancel three fights that we originally confirmed. Unfortunately three members from the opposing team have pulled out for various reasons leaving us in a tight spot but we have pulled together some other matches that will be equally as entertaining for the spectators. It is going to be a great show.
“Kenny Dryburgh against Darwin Lanza will be a great match up. Kenny is a strong and skilled fighter will some serious power and anyone that he is matched up against is going to have their hands full.
“Dave O’Driscoll faces Bobby Diagle and that also promises to be an excellent match up. Bobby is tall and long with a good reach and Dave is very strong and technically proficient. There is no quit in Dave and I know that with him competing in his home gym he will give his heart and leave everything he has in the ring.
“The exhibition match between Garry Tierny and Ryan Charles will also be an exciting one. Both guys are very talented and getting better every training session.
“Ryan and Garry both train at Rogue with me and some of their sparring sessions are better than actual fights I’ve seen in the past. This one will be no stop action.
Tickets are sold at the door only.
